Have a question?
We have a team of people who have the answers.
Charleston International Airport Ambassadors are volunteers from all walks of life who donate their time, experience and enthusiasm to help travelers and visitors enjoy their time at the airport and in the Lowcountry. Because they live and work here, our volunteers are able to help visitors get information about transportation and tourism- and entertainment-related activities in the local area.
Dressed in blue vests, carrying a “How may I help you?” clipboard, our team of ambassadors stand ready to any question from “Where’s the restroom” to “How do I catch a shuttle downtown?” to “How do I get to my gate?”
The CHS Ambassador Program began March 13, 2011 to help travelers navigate our growing airport. Charleston International welcomes 15,000 people a day through its doors and more than 2.6 million passengers a year.
The program began with six volunteers and has grown to more than 26 men and women who volunteer at least two hours a week. Among our volunteers are former college professors, teachers and researchers and retired leaders in business and industry.
There is no limit on the amount of hours an ambassador can volunteer and our schedules are flexible.
Ambassadors do not need previous experience but the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds is required. Foreign language skills are a plus.
Our ambassadors meet and speak to people from all over the world so excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills are a must. The ability to remain calm in stressful situations or with the occasional upset passenger goes a long way toward making the travel experience a good one for our visitors. And our ambassadors must have the same friendly, positive attitude that has led many international travel magazines to name Charleston, S.C., one of the nation’s friendliest cities.
CHS ambassadors must be at least 18 years old and be willing to donate at least two hours a week. All ambassadors must pass a criminal background check before they can volunteer at the airport.
