| The
Aviation Authority Police Department Office of Training and Professional Standards is
responsible for planning, organizing and promoting the training for all sworn and
non-sworn personnel. The Training function is responsible for ensuring all sworn officers
maintain all required training certifications required through the South Carolina Criminal
Justice Academy.
All Aviation Police Officers are state
certified and receive trained in the multi-faceted aviation-specific duties required by
the Federal Aviation Administration, Transportation Security Administration, and the
Charleston County Aviation Authority. Officers receive training regarding federal law
pertaining to civil aviation security and operations. Officers are also required to
perform law enforcement duties, such as crime suppression, detection, and apprehension.
Other duties include, traffic enforcement, accident investigation, report writing, warrant
service, and patrols of the airport property. Airport Officers respond to calls of service
inside the Terminal Building, on the airfield, and to businesses on property.
The primary requirement of the Airport
Police, by Federal mandate, is the rapid response to the Security Checkpoint in the event
of a security breach or illegal items being brought through security. Officers routinely
respond to the checkpoints for dangerous weapons or items prohibited by the federal
government. In addition to police related duties, officers are routinely tasked with a
myriad of airport operations functions as well, including responding to fuel spills,
wildlife incursions, debris on the runway, or anything that would affect the safety of the
flying public. Officers conduct safety inspections for the airfield and respond to
in-flight emergencies when required.
Employment opportunities in the aviation
environment, especially airport law enforcement, provide challenging and rewarding career
opportunities.
